Street finishes Sixteenth

Team Sprint athlete Picabo Street failed to medal in the women’s downhill in what she has said will be the last race of her career. She finished 16th.

Street started the race quickly, with the fastest times at the first two timing spots, but she lost time on her second jump, finishing 1.61 seconds behind gold medal winner Carole Montillet of France.

Competing in the games is the culmination of a remarkable comeback story for Street. Early in the 1996-1997 season, she crashed during a training run at Vail, Colo., and tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. While most skiers believe it takes two years to recover from ACL reconstruction, Street was determined to return to competition in one year. She not only came back, she captured the gold medal in the super-G at the 1998 Nagano Games -- even though she had never won a World Cup race in that event.
