Employee health at Sprint is about more than just the competitive medical and dental insurance plans we offer our employees; rather, it is a much more holistic, all-encompassing idea that permeates every aspect of the Sprint work experience. In fact, our focus on employee health has regularly earned us recognition from the National Business Group on Health (NBGH); in 2007, our first year for entering, Sprint earned a silver-level Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award, and in both 2008 and 2009, Sprint earned gold-level awards.
Our headquarters campus in Overland Park, Kan., which hosts the largest concentration of Sprint employees (approximately 15%), is a prime example of our wellness mission. Boasting many walking trails and garages situated on the campus perimeter (rather than adjacent to every building), the campus was designed as a pedestrian-friendly and walker-focused environment. Similarly, staircases within buildings are wider than usual and frequently feature artwork, all in the spirit of inviting more usage.
Fitness centers have been a mainstay of our corporate culture dating back into the mid 1980's, so when construction began on the Overland Park Campus in 1997, including a state-of-the-art fitness center was very important. The Campus Fitness Center offers employees convenient workouts and knowledgeable staff. The 71,000 square foot facility offers a yoga studio, Spinning® classes, a group-exercise studio, a full array of strength and cardiovascular equipment, a multi-lane perimeter walking/running track, a gymnasium, a recreation area, teambuilding activities, wellness programming, fitness-incentive programs, recreation leagues, and locker rooms with showers, saunas, and towel service. Membership for employees is approximately $35 a month - much less expensive than many off-site facilities!
Also on the Overland Park Campus, employees and dependents will find an on-site health center, staffed with a physician, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and radiological technicians. The convenient location and very reasonable cost (just $10 or $15 per exam) make the health center a true value for employees looking to manage and prevent health conditions. The Overland Park Campus also has an on-site pharmacy, allowing employees to fill prescriptions prescribed by the on-site health center and elsewhere. Similarly, Sprint’s Reston, Va., employee campus, which hosts approximately 4% of Sprint’s employee base, features on-site fitness centers, a health center, a pharmacy and a physical-therapy center.
In addition to the Overland Park and Reston campuses, Sprint targets customized wellness programs to other work locations with large numbers of employees, such as call centers. In addition, a “refresh” of Sprint retail stores being implemented in late 2009 and early 2010 involves replacing existing paint and carpet with low volatile organic compound (VOC) substances. The low-VOC paint and carpet not only reduces the stores' carbon footprint - it improves the air quality for our customers and employees.
Sprint Alive! is a program available for all Sprint employees and their eligible dependents, regardless of location. Sprint Alive! is a first-class comprehensive benefit that provides valuable programs and resources to help employees and dependents improve their health while saving money. Administered by a third-party company, Sprint Alive! and its services are absolutely free and completely confidential.
Sprint Alive! features a toll-free Nurse Line with Nurse Advocates available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing medical information and assistance to employees and their families. In addition, Sprint Alive! offers an online Health Assessment, which employees and dependents can take to identify current and potential health risks. Employees and dependents are eligible to enroll in a number of Sprint Alive! programs, such as Maternity, Healthy Back, Diabetes, Heart Health, Weight Loss, Exercise and Smoking Cessation (including free nicotine-replacement products). These programs are free and confidential.
Sprint and its partners provide additional Sprint Alive! programs for employees over the course of the year such as free seasonal flu shots, regular Health Forum webcasts and Lunch & Learn health discussions, on-site Health Fairs, and programs focusing on exercise, weight loss and healthy lifestyles.
State of mind can have a huge impact on physical health. That’s why Sprint also offers an employee assistance program, or Guidance Resources, providing comprehensive resource information and confidential counseling on a variety of topics, including work/life balance, child-care and elder-care providers, and life events (marriage, children, death of a loved one). These employee assistance services are free to employees and their eligible dependents and 100% confidential.
