Sprint PCSSM Wi-Fi Access Troubleshooting Tips (for client software access)
Learn more about wireless connecting
When you enter a Sprint compatible public Wi-Fi ZONE, and Sprint PCS Connection ManagerSM Software with Wi-Fi is running on your computer, you should receive a pop-up window alerting you that Sprint PCS Wi-Fi Access is available in that location. There may be some rare occasions when either your Wi-Fi card or your software is not associating with the network you're trying to use.
Every manufacturer's Wi-Fi card has differences, and you should read your user guide carefully to educate yourself on how to install the client utility and drivers, use the card in a Wi-Fi ZONE, and locate more up-to-date drivers on the Internet if necessary. Here are some additional troubleshooting hints.
Problem:
If Sprint PCS Connection Manager Software with Wi-Fi is Searching for service for more than 3 - 4 minutes:
Check the indicator lights on your Wi-Fi card indicating any activity.
 |
If the lights are not blinking, then:
Use the card's client utility to restart the card. You may have to restart Sprint PCS Connection Manager also. |
 |
 |
If card's lights are blinking, then:
Restart Sprint PCS Connection Manager. Open Internet Explorer, if you do not get the Wi-Fi host provider's redirect page, the card is not associating to the local Wi-Fi network. You can try using the client utility for your Wi-Fi card and do a site survey. If the network (Wi-Fi host provider) shows up in the list, click Connect to get associated. Otherwise, you should contact the card manufacturer for assistance. See Image below for an example of the client utility of a popular Wi-Fi card, which you'd access to do a Site Survey. |
NOTE: Some Wi-Fi cards have an option on the Profiles screen that says Allow other applications to access the card. This option must be checked (or unchecked, depending on the wording).
NOTE: Some embedded Wi-Fi laptops have an option in the Properties box for (Wireless) Network Connections that allow (or disallow, depending on the wording) connections to unsecure networks. All public networks are considered unsecure by the operating system because public networks do not use something called "WEP Security." You need to enable these "Unsecure" connections to use a public Wi-Fi network.
Problem: If Sprint PCS Connection Manager Software with Wi-Fi says Please insert card even after you've inserted your card, one of a few scenarios may be the cause:
If you've already installed Sprint PCS Connection Manager before the card, please navigate to C:/Program Files/Sprint/PCS Connection Manager/iPass/drivers.
Open the InstallDriver98me.exe file. Choose Uninstall. Once uninstall is complete, choose Reinstall. You'll need to reboot for change to take effect. The Wi-Fi Card should now be recognized.
Problem:
If Sprint PCS Connection Manager says Connected, but web pages will not display:
In Sprint PCS Connection Manager go to Menu on your software user interface
/ Settings / Proxies. Check Do not use a proxy server.
Problem: If Sprint PCS Connection Manager says Disconnected, but the New User, Terms of Use, and Forgot Password links do not bring up web pages:
In Sprint PCS Connection Manager go to Menu on your software user interface
/ Settings / Proxies.
Check Do not use a proxy server.
Problem: If Installation is getting stuck on Panasonic laptops with embedded Wi-Fi at around 80% complete:
Reboot computer and navigate to C:/Program Files/Sprint/PCS Connection Manager/iPass/drivers. Open the InstallDriver2KXP.exe file. Choose Uninstall. Once uninstall is complete, choose Reinstall. You'll have to reboot for change to take effect. Installation should be complete.
NOTE: Please follow your company guidelines for launching VPNs when accessing corporate information remotely. Personal firewalls and virus protection agents are also good safeguards and are readily available on the Internet and through select retailers.
Please be aware that VPNs handle data traffic differently, depending on the configuration your company elected to deploy. Some VPNs allow "split tunneling" which directs the traffic that is destined for the corporate network through the VPN tunnel, but if the traffic is destined for the Internet, it will not traverse the VPN tunnel.
In cases of "split tunneling" a third party software client can terminate a data connection despite the VPN.
But if the VPN does not allow split tunneling (a choice that each company makes separately), the VPN may keep a data connection up and running even when the software client has disconnected.
If the software you are using goes to a "Disconnected" state, but you are still logged into your corporate network and transmitting data, you should logoff of your VPN to terminate the data session.
A similar thing happens sometimes when using VPNs and no software connection client (Web Login), causing web browser pages to appear as "cannot display page" because the VPN is running. Close the VPN, and the "cannot display" to correct the problem.
